Create an interesting environment for your baby to look at by hanging pictures in contrasting colours on the wall. Change the pictures or their positions occassionally to keep things new and interesting.
An influential study demonstrated that an infant's visual attention to a familiar, repeated image decreases compared to their attention to a novel image. Fantz R. L. (1964). Visual experience in infants: decreased attention to familiar patterns relative to novel ones. Science 146, 668–670. Mather E. (2013). Novelty, attention, and challenges for developmental psychology. Frontiers in psychology, 4, 491.
Newborns can see things about 20 centimeters away, and are curious about what is in their surroundings. Giving infants new stimulus will continue to attract their attention and sustain their curiosity. Pictures on the wall and normal family activity are naturally fascinating. Rotating the pictures keeps it “fresh” for the child.
