When your baby is awake, place your baby on his/her tummy for short periods of time, giving them an opportunity to look around and explore. This is commonly referred to as ''tummy time''.
Note: Always supervise your infant during "tummy time" and be ready to help if he or she gets tired or frustrated in this position. Never put a baby to sleep on his or her stomach. Infants should sleep on their backs to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Tummy time helps develop the essential functions for further motor and cognitive development. These functions include normal curves of the spine, trunk and neck muscles, weight bearing, visual motor skills, reciprocal patterns and reflexes.
